Why Does Your Hair Color Fade So Quickly? The Secret Might Be Your Hair's pH.

Why Does Your Hair Color Fade So Quickly? The Secret Might Be Your Hair's pH.

Most people focus on the hair color itself, but one of the biggest factors in how long your color lasts is something most people never think about: pH.

Healthy hair naturally has a slightly acidic pH of around 4.5 to 5.5. At this level, the outer layer of the hair (called the cuticle) stays flat and smooth. This helps hair look shiny, feel soft, and keep moisture and color locked inside.

When you color your hair, the pH of the hair becomes much more alkaline. This is an important part of the coloring process because it helps open the hair cuticles, allowing the color to enter the hair. But once the coloring is done, those cuticles need to close again. If they stay open, color can wash out more easily, and hair can start to feel drier, rougher, and frizzier.

That's why what you use after coloring matters so much.

At 2.Oh!, our Post Color Shampoo and Post Color Mask are formulated at pH 4.5, which is very close to hair's natural pH. This helps bring the hair back to a healthier state after coloring and encourages the cuticles to lie flatter and smoother.

When the cuticles are smoother, hair reflects more light, which means more shine. It also helps reduce color bleeding during washes, so your color stays vibrant for longer. Hair feels softer, looks healthier, and is easier to manage.

We've also included our Color Protect Compound in both formulas to help support long-lasting color vibrancy and keep freshly colored hair looking its best.

A simple way to think about it is this: during coloring, the hair cuticles open so the color can get in. After coloring, you want them to close again so the color stays in. A pH 4.5 post-color ritual helps do exactly that—helping your hair stay smoother, shinier, and your color stay fresher for longer.
