Can washing an oily scalp too often make dry lengths even drier?

Can washing an oily scalp too often make dry lengths even drier?

Yes. An oily scalp and dry lengths can exist at the same time. Your scalp produces natural oils, so the roots can become greasy quite quickly. But the lengths and ends receive very little of this oil. They are also the oldest part of your hair. Over time, washing, brushing, colouring, heat styling, sunlight and friction can make them dry, rough and weak. So even when your scalp feels oily, your lengths may still need extra moisture and protection.

Frequent washing is not always the problem. What matters is how you wash your hair and which shampoo you use. Strong cleansers, very hot water and rubbing shampoo into the lengths can strip away the hair’s natural protective layer. This makes the outer cuticle rougher. Moisture escapes more easily, strands rub against each other and the hair starts to tangle. And the more it tangles, the more likely it is to break while brushing. If your scalp needs frequent washing, concentrate the shampoo mainly on the roots. The lather that runs through the lengths while rinsing is usually enough to clean them. Our 2.Oh! Reconstruction Shampoo has a gentle Tri-Surfactant Formula. It cleanses effectively without stripping the hair and also helps reduce frizz.

A mask and leave-in conditioner are a must for dry lengths. After shampooing, use our 2.Oh! Reconstruction Hair Mask to deeply condition and nourish the hair. It helps restore lost moisture and leaves dry, damaged lengths softer, smoother and easier to detangle. Then follow with our 2.Oh! Leave-In Conditioner after every wash. This step is especially important for protecting hair against breakage. The lightweight formula, with Panthenol and Argan Oil, helps seal in the moisture and all the conditioning goodness of the mask. It also creates a protective layer around each strand. This reduces friction and helps your hair detangle more easily, so there is less pulling and breakage while brushing. It also protects your lengths from the everyday damage caused by styling, friction and exposure. The ideal routine is simple: gently cleanse the oily scalp, nourish the dry lengths with a mask and lock in that moisture with a leave-in. You may not need to wash your hair less—you simply need to make every wash gentler and more protective.
